People of Siem Reap

In 2017, I embarked on my volunteering experiences in Laos, Thailand and Cambodia.

Along my journey, I have encountered many beautiful people and learned about their stories.

People of Siem Reap is my debut project of PeopleStories.

"I grew up in a large family with 9 siblings. Being the 3rd eldest one, I had to quit school at grade 4 and start working. I was only 13 then! I still remember crying all night when that happened!
I now sell sugar cane juice and sweets in the neighbourhood. I do this simply because we need the money. For an exceptional day, I can sell 70 drinks and make around $9.

My day is very long... I get up at 5am to prep the sugar cane including a couple of hours of peeling off the hard skins. After helping my eldest daughter to school, I then nurse my young one who is 2 and be ready for the day.

As it is a roadside stall, I need to transport everything including the heavy juicing machine there. This means using my motorbike to drag a large trolley full of things plus my daughter in my arms.

I have 2 very good daughters who stay at the stall with me, and my husband helps whenever he can.

I return home at around 7:30pm and have to hurry to get dinner on the table. By the time is 10pm, I will get my daughters to bed and be ready for next day all over again.

My dream was going to be a teacher. Now, I only want to see my daughters get good education and have the freedom to follow their dreams.

One of my happiest moment in life was for the first time signing at a KTV."
