A dream comes true - Teacher Sarith

After a visit to a STEM school with Victoria and Oliver that is 12 hours away from home, Teacher Sarith, who is a volunteer with PeopleStories, dreamt of getting his students to study in this school to have a brighter future.

Sarith recalled, “After the visit, I saw incredible possibilities and couldn’t stop sharing with my students about the opportunity to study at this school.  First step is to take the entrance exam at this STEM school.”  The students were very interested in the school system in the STEM school described by Teacher Sarith and asked many important questions including “what job can we get after studying STEM?”.
PeopleStories scholars were inspired to take up the challenge.  Though they had a difficult time continuing their studies during school closure, they persevered with support from Teacher Sarith.  They were also grateful for the PeopleStories Covid-19 relief packages and the ever-present encouragement and advice from PeopleStories.

The day finally came, Teacher Sarith accompanied 4 students to Phnom Penh to take the entry exams.  It was an eye-opening experience for the students.  They were amazed to see the well-equipped classrooms and the possible exciting careers like becoming scientists, doctors, engineers, architects, chemists and technicians.  Their dreams are no longer limited to being teachers in their village school!

One student gushed, “The teachers here are all young and knowledgeable to teach students about science and technology.  I think this school really can provide a great education to the students. I really like this kind of education.”

Another student observed,
“The students here look hard-working, brave, enthusiastic, punctual, and disciplined.”

In fact, this STEM school visit has inspired them to cultivate good study habits, be brave, enthusiastic, punctual, hard-working, read more books, do more search and practise at home every day.  The students also like the fact that the school principal was strict, tolerant, clear and able to maintain good discipline in the students.

They now dream of being accepted by the STEM school and have a clearer path to what they want to achieve in the future.
Teacher Sarith shared, “I felt very excited, happy and hopeful when I accompanied them on the trip. I thought that some of them might have a chance to pass the entrance exam.”

He did not feel tired although he had a hectic schedule to follow and it was a 12 hour travel from the villages to Phnom Penh.  He emphasized, “I really want to help them and I want to see them have a good future through a good education at this STEM school.”

Teacher Sarith has a dream for “Road to STEM” project: to have PeopleStories scholarship students passing the entrance exam and studying in the STEM school every year.

A dream catcher protects the sleeping individual from negative dreams while letting positive dreams pass through. Teacher Sarith is certainly an encouraging dream catcher for his students.
