People of Siem Reap

In 2017, I embarked on my volunteering experiences in Laos, Thailand and Cambodia.

Along my journey, I have encountered many beautiful people and learned about their stories.

People of Siem Reap is my debut project of PeopleStories.

Bike for school, bike for life... ultimately break the cycle of poverty!

"I came from a family of 8 but sadly 2 of my siblings died young because of the war.  Not long after I started school, I had to stop because both of my parents passed away and there wasn't money to support my education.  I self-studied for some
time before deciding to join the army.  At the army, it was tough not only because of the physical challenge but we were constantly moving from one place to the other.  I didn't like being away from my family for too long hence I left the army after 3 years.  Then, I became a temple boy as they were giving me a free home with food and education.  At the temple, I studied hard and eventually passed the test for becoming a teacher.  That was the happiest moment in my life!  I started teaching at my current school in 1987 and I am a very proud school principle for the last 30 years.  At our school, there are many students coming from poor families.  Some of them don't even have shoes to wear or enough food to eat.  They miss school sometime as they don't have bikes to help commuting to and from school.  My dream is to provide bikes to the disadvantaged students, so that they can come to school everyday and be educated.  Ultimately break the cycle of poverty they are trapped in."
