People of Siem Reap

In 2017, I embarked on my volunteering experiences in Laos, Thailand and Cambodia.

Along my journey, I have encountered many beautiful people and learned about their stories.

People of Siem Reap is my debut project of PeopleStories.

I believe in standing up for myself...

"I have been a hotel front office manager for some years now and my success didn't come easy...  I was born in a big family and lived in the country side very close to the Thai boarder.  My father lost his legs from some landmine  and he used to
fight with my mother a lot.  When I was 12, there were many problems with my family including no food to eat and my mum often got physically abused.   So I decided to leave home and wanted to stay at an orphan school!  That was a big decision for me but I had to stand up for myself for a better future.  I  spent 1.5 days on the road and finally arrived in the big city of Siem Reap.  There were many of us (700 students) at the orphan school and I always studied hard with great results from the class.  As much as I wanted to experience  the city life, I was even too scared to cross the road as there were so many cars.  I was fascinated and attracted by the local dessert from the road side food stall but it took me a few days standing there before having the courage to ask 'how much is it?'.  Later on in life, I left home once again and was working as a domestic helper in Malaysia for a few years.  I received great love and compassion from my employer and we are still in contact these days.  After I returned to Siem Reap in 2010, I worked very hard as a waitress for a number of years and got various promotions along the way.  My success didn't come easy as I had to work hard and learn fast.  My dream now is to have my own business... may be processing and selling rice one day."
