People of Siem Reap

In 2017, I embarked on my volunteering experiences in Laos, Thailand and Cambodia.

Along my journey, I have encountered many beautiful people and learned about their stories.

People of Siem Reap is my debut project of PeopleStories.

Life long learning... Never too late!

"Both of my parents are in their 60s and they are hardworking farmers.  I am 38 years old now and I love learning but it wasn’t the same when I was younger.  When I was 16 years old at grade 9, I dropped out from school because I didn’t enjoy
it.  So I became a carpentry apprentice and was earning $1 a day.  After a few months, I lost interest so I started farming with my parents.  I wanted to return to school after a few years of farming, unfortunately, my father would not support me.  To make the matter worse, no school would take me as I was much older than the other children.  Then I started learning English in the evening and farming during the day.  When I was 22 years old, I wanted to attend High School but may father once again could not support me.  So I became a tourist motorbike driver where I could earn money and practiced English with tourists at the same time.  Later on, I went to the temple school for education.  After 7 years at the temple, I finally graduated from High School and I was 31 years old.  That was one of my proudest moments in life!  My spirit for learning continues from there and I finally graduated from university not long ago.  When I was young, my dream was to become a policeman as they look handsome in the uniform.  Nowadays, I farm in the morning then work at my wife’s corner shop before teaching at the community school.  I am happily married and have two beautiful daughters."
