People of Siem Reap

In 2017, I embarked on my volunteering experiences in Laos, Thailand and Cambodia.

Along my journey, I have encountered many beautiful people and learned about their stories.

People of Siem Reap is my debut project of PeopleStories.

"I was born in a family of 5 brothers from the country side of Siem Reap.  My father is a fisherman for all his life and my mother just passed away last year at the age of 65.  Our family didn't have a lot but I believe we were luckier than many
others because we grew up with both of our parents and education was seen as important in my family.   Having said that, I had to work hard to fund myself to complete all the way to university.  I started working as a waiter at Pub Street while studying at secondary school.  I used to earn around $50 a month.  Then I decided to work full time at a restaurant and earned $150  per month while studying university over the weekends.  I also worked as a tour guide where I could practice my English with tourists.  Since 2012, I have been an assistant manager at this boutique bar and enjoy making many different kinds of cocktails for customers.  One of my saddest memories was when my parents could not have enough money for me to have private tuition during secondary school.  You see, students here need to pay for extra tuition after class if they want to learn better.  My happiest time was marrying my wife!  My dream now is to open my own restaurant one day.”
